FIVE TRUTHS

Five Truths was an exhibition commissioned by the V&A and curated/created by Katie Mitchell. The 'five truths' are the five views of how to convey the truth held by Stanislavski, Brecht, Artaud, Grotowski and Brook. The exhibition took Ophelia's preparations for suicide as its motif and showed this in five different ways, in hi-definition video sequences, projected in phased simultaneity in a darkened room at the V&A and, later, the National Theatre. I was involved as a dramaturg and advisor on the project, talking to Katie and the actress Michelle Terry about the different views of the five men and then writing a Brechtianised version of the 'There is a willow grows aslant a brook' speech. The exhibition opened in July 2011. There was a very positive piece on it by Matt Trueman in The Guardian.
